Let’s Talk Hiring: Tips for Bringing Help Into Your Small Business
Share
Thinking about hiring help in your small business? Whether you’re looking at seasonal support, a full-time employee, or someone to assist with fulfillment and packaging, it’s a big step—and one worth planning out carefully.
I've hired several different types of employees over the years, including full-time, part-time, and remote, and I also generally bring on a seasonal employee for the busy season. Each role has looked a little different based on what my business needed at the time.
Here are some things I’ve learned that might help you if you’re thinking about hiring, too:
- Pay on the books. Besides staying compliant with tax regulations, this also allows you to count payroll as a business expense—something that can be helpful come tax time.
- Understand the difference between W-2 and 1099. If someone works regular hours in your space under your direction, they’re most likely a W-2 employee—not an independent contractor. Always confirm with your CPA.
- Post your job listing locally. I've had great luck posting in local "What's Happening" Facebook groups. You don’t always need a big hiring platform to find great help.
- Choose a payroll system that works for you. I use an online payroll service that handles everything from logging hours and direct deposit to filing payroll taxes and generating paystubs. It saves a lot of time and effort!
- Be clear in your job listing. Include details like hours, pay rate, job duration, schedule consistency, and job responsibilities. Transparency helps avoid confusion later on.
One thing I also like to include is a quick note about our workplace culture—our team is made up of moms who work during school hours, and we often listen to true crime podcasts while working. Sharing a little of your team vibe can help applicants know if they’ll be a good fit.
Questions to clarify in your job listing:
- Is the role part-time or full-time?
- Is it temporary or permanent?
- What is the hourly rate and payment schedule?
- What are the job responsibilities and expectations?
- Are there any required skills or qualifications?
Whether you’re hiring your first team member or just bringing in extra help for the holidays, planning ahead can make the process smoother for everyone.
